If you’ve ever wondered, “How can steak possibly get any better?” I have news for you: it can.

I’m a big fan of keeping my steak simple with an easy breezy sprinkle of salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. However, adding this rich and creamy garlic butter steak sauce is an instant game changer.

It boasts just the right amount of garlic flavor, adds a silky texture, and ties the meal together in a restaurant-quality manner. Plus, it makes vegetables a million times more enticing, so be sure to drizzle some on your veggies, too!

I see this creamy garlic butter sauce as the perfect filet mignon sauce recipe because the rich sauce is the perfect complement to lean cuts of beef, like filet. It is also marvelous on chuck roast, skirt steak, and flank steak, or any lean cut of beef.

Whip this garlic cream sauce up the next time steak is on the menu, and be sure to include it the next time you’re entertaining guests!

Ingredient Notes:

Unsalted Butter: Brings classic butter flavor to the sauce. Use unsalted butter so that you can salt the sauce to your personal taste. Replace it with olive oil or avocado oil if you prefer.

Fresh Garlic: The true MVP here, fresh garlic is the backbone of this easy sauce recipe. You can scale the amount up or down, depending on your personal preference.

Flour: To thicken the sauce, use regular all-purpose flour or gluten-free all-purpose flour.

Heavy Cream: Rich, silky smooth texture and creamy consistency comes from heavy cream. For fewer calories, you can use half & half. Just note that the sauce won’t turn out as thick.

Sea Salt and Black Pepper: Season the garlic butter sauce to your personal taste with salt and pepper.

Ways to Customize:

  • Fresh Herbs: While I don’t add them, you can easily toss in some finely chopped fresh rosemary, fresh parsley, etc. for a garlic herb butter sauce. Dried herbs work too.
  • Citrus Twist: Add a little lemon zest and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice for a sauce that pairs magically with all types of fish, particularly salmon.
  • Fancy Steakhouse Sauce: Looking for a steakhouse sauce? Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of Dijon mustard (to your personal taste) and 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder.

How to Make Garlic Butter Steak Sauce:

Transfer the butter to a medium-sized skillet and heat over medium heat. Allow the butter to melt, then add the fresh minced garlic. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until the garlic is very fragrant and has softened, about 5 minutes.

Be sure to keep the temperature under control so that the butter and the garlic remain light in color and don’t turn brown.
