If you tried my Gluten-Free Crab Cakes, please give my all-time favorite Crab Cake Sauce a warm welcome!

You see, in my crab cake recipe, I neglected to share the perfect complementary sauce, which is why I have since corrected the mistake. I’ve perfected this beauty for the loveliest balance of flavors to make sure your crispy crab cakes are paired with the most magical companion,

I also love the idea of serving this remoulade sauce alongside my Hush Puppies or my Crispy Sweet Potato Fries for a wonderful dipping sauce.

All you need is a handful of simple ingredients, many of which you probably have on hand! Everything can be found at most grocery stores.

Crab Cake Sauce Ingredients:

Mayonnaise: Creating a rich and creamy base, mayonnaise is here for flavor and silky texture.

Hot Sauce: Pick your favorite red chili based hot sauce, such as Crystal for a little kick of heat.

Fresh Lemon Juice: Adds a zing of acidity that complements the fish and acts as a counterbalance to the rich mayo.

Dijon Mustard: Here for tangy, earthy flavor, mustard goes great with fish, regardless of the context, which is why it works so well in this easy sauce recipe.

Worcestershire Sauce: Adds a big kick of umami flavor to level the whole sauce up.

Fresh Garlic: Garlic brings vibrant fresh flavor to everything it touches, and that plays out nicely in this sauce.

Fresh Chives: Brings that garden fresh onion flavor. You can swap them out for finely chopped green onion. Consider adding some fresh parsley too!

Cajun Seasoning and Ground Paprika: The combination of Cajun seasoning or Creole seasoning and sweet paprika brings a slightly smoky flavor. Neither are mandatory, so feel free to skip. Old bay seasoning works here too.

Sea Salt and Black Pepper: Season the salt to your personal taste using salt and pepper.

Ways to Customize:

  • Swap part or all of the mayonnaise base for Greek yogurt or sour cream for a lighter sauce. You can also start with a tartar sauce base and build from there.
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of capers if you have them on hand and love them.
  • Many of the ingredients, such as the mustard, worcestershire sauce, Cajun seasoning, and paprika can be safely omitted without sacrificing the whole show. Just be sure to keep in the mayo, hot sauce, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper. These are the key ingredients!
  • Add fresh lemon zest for bigger lemon flavor.
  • Feel free to add in some cocktail sauce.

How to Make Crab Cake Sauce:

Where to Use Crab Cake Sauce:

Of course, my favorite application for this great recipe are on top of classic crab cakes made with jumbo lump crab.

You can also use this sauce for dipping or topping any kind of fish cakes, shrimp (fried, steamed, or sauteed), chicken tenders, sandwiches, hamburgers, wraps, fries, fish and chips, and so much more! Whatever you use it on, this homemade sauce will take your meal to the next level.
