Cheddar Cheese Crepes with Spiced Apples and Salted Caramel | gluten free and naturally sweetened

These white cheddar crepes come with a delightful warmly-spiced apple topping, a drizzle of homemade caramel sauce, and all the sweet and savory flavors to drive your taste buds crazy!

How do you do with the sweet and savory combo?

Could you just ravage a bag of chocolate covered pretzels, or would you rather keep your sugar away from your salt and your salt away from your sugar?

This easy savory crepe recipe is all about the beautiful marriage of sweet and savory flavors. They get along famously in holy crepetramony!

Get it? That’s like matrimony, but for crepes.

Let’s keep going.

Aged cheddar is the all star secret ingredient that makes these rich crepes taste out of this world delicious!

Let’s discuss the simple ingredients to make these amazing crepes.

Ingredients for White Cheddar Crepes with Spiced Apples and Caramel:

Crepes: Use your own tried and true crepe recipe or choose from one of mine. I made these Grain-Free Crepes, and these Gluten-Free Crepes work too.

For the Apple Topping: Fresh apples, apple cider, pure maple syrup, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of sea salt.

Aged White Cheddar: Pick your favorite kind of melting cheese. I use white cheddar cheese, but regular cheddar cheese, gruyere cheese, and gouda cheese are all fabulous options.

Caramel Sauce: Make homemade salted caramel sauce (as seen in this recipe), or buy store-bought caramel sauce.

When following my recipe for savory crepes to a T, we end up with grain-free and refined sugar-free crepes. There are lots of ways this recipe can be customized to fit your dietary preferences!

How to Make White Cheddar Crepes with Spiced Apples:

Begin by preparing the Salted Caramel. This can be done several days ahead of time. This is the lengthiest part about the recipe, so be sure to take care of the caramel first.

Next, make a batch of crepes. Use one of my crepe recipes, or make your favorite recipe for homemade crepes!

Sprinkle some grated aged white cheddar over them while the crepes are still cooking in the hot pan.

Kind of like a crepe quesadilla.

The rich flavorful cheese makes scrumptious melty delight within the folds of your crepe. And then we do things like add a little sweet to our salty bliss.

Prepare the Apple Topping:

I made an apple topping for these crepes, which is sweetened with pure maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and spiced apple cider.

To do so, add all ingredients for the apple topping to a small saucepan and heat to medium.

Bring to a full boil, reduce the heat slightly, and allow apples to cook at a full but gentle boil. Stirring occasionally, cook until most of the liquid is absorbed and apples have softened, about 8 to 10 minutes.

Top the cheesy crepes with the soft, spiced stewed apples with a drizzle of caramel on top.

Serve these crepes with a dollop of Greek yogurt or homemade whipped cream, and you’ve got yourself a dessert that hits all the texture bases and satisfies both your sweet and salty cravings.

P.S. These are calorie-free. I jest.

Ingredients

For the Salted Coconut Caramel Sauce:

For the Apple Topping:

For serving:

  • 1 cup aged white cheddar, grated
  • Homemade whipped cream or plain Greek yogurt

Instructions

  • Follow the instructions for making the gluten free crepe batter.

Make the Salted Coconut Caramel:

  • Add the coconut milk, maple syrup, and coconut sugar to a medium-sized sauce pan and bring it to a full boil. Allow mixture to boil, stirring frequently, until thickened, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Add the vanilla extract, salt, and unsalted butter to the caramel mixture. Stir until combined, then remove caramel from the heat.
  • Set aside until ready to use. Note that the caramel will continue to thicken the longer it sits.

Make the Apple Topping:

  • Add all ingredients for the apple topping to a small saucepan and heat to medium.
  • Bring to a full boil, reduce the heat slightly, and allow apples to cook at a full but gentle boil. Stirring occasionally, cook until most of the liquid is absorbed and apples have softened, about 8 to 10 minutes.

Make the Crepes:

  • Take the crepe batter out of the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature (or close to it).
  • Heat a medium-sized (9 or 10-inch) skillet to medium-low with just enough oil or butter to lightly coat the surface.
  • Measure ¼ cup of the batter and pour it onto the center of the hot skillet. Immediately rotate the pan so that the batter is thinly covering the whole surface. Allow batter to cook until the edges begin to pull away from the pan and small air bubbles rise to the surface, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Carefully flip crepe to the other side and add desired amount of cheddar cheese (I used about 3 tablespoons of cheese per crepe). Allow cheese to melt then transfer the crepe to a plate. Fold it into a rectangle and top it with desired amount of apple topping, salted caramel, and a dollop of whipped cream or plain Greek yogurt.
  • Repeat for remaining batter and enjoy!

Calorie-free crepes really are my biggest fantasy. All joking aside though, these crepes aren’t half bad for ya. They’re like diet crepes you’d never know were diet. 😉 So glad you like the savory-sweet!

  15. Julie says:

Oh, my gosh. I want these for breakfast–like right now! Sadly, I don’t have them (and let’s ignore the thought that I could get up and make them. I want to be needy and have them brought to me.) Let’s have them at the reception. You and me–making crepes for everyone. Wonder what they would look like after we have a few drinks in us? Hmmm…we might want to work on this plan.

IDEA: WHAT IF: there were a pancake griddle at the Stephie-Alex “Event” and on said pancake griddle, we made legit crepes immediately following our beer bottle rendition of some Blake/Usher/Adam/Christina song? I’m liking the way this sounds so much, that I’d go so far as to say we should be Stephie’s official “event” planners 😉

      1. Julie says:

Perfect! I wasn’t wanting to spend money on one anyway. We’d be free and, clearly, much better. This is a great plan!

  16. Liz @ Floating Kitchen says:

This looks amazing! I just love cheddar cheese with apples. And salted caramel – obviously we need more of that in our lives. Beautiful recipe, Julia!

    1. Julia says:

Thanks, my dear! Isn’t the apple + cheddar combo just so fine and dandy? Hope you try these – salted caramel and all!
