A detoxifying mango smoothie with golden beets and turmeric – packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. And all the fiber.

Golden Beet, Mango, and Turmeric Smoothie - a healing superfood smoothie recipe!

My local grocery store doesn’t normally carry fresh turmeric, so when I spied it next to the ginger, I busted out the Carlton.

Beet-Turmeric-Mango Smoothie

^^^ That’s turmeric. It looks like ginger got frisky with a carrot. ^^^

Anyway, turmeric can be difficult to spot at the grocery store because there is little demand for the fresh version in this country. Instead, we tend to use the ground version, which you can definitely do for this smoothie!

Turmeric has been used in Chinese and Indian medicine for centuries in order to treat inflammation, jaundice, menstrual discomfort, chest pain, colic, and more. We now know turmeric helps alleviate and treat inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, cystic fibrosis, and cancer. Not to mention, turmeric aids in digestion, boosts your immune system, and and lowers your cholesterol. It is full of antioxidants and is famous for being extremely cleansing for your liver.

Combining fresh turmeric with ginger and golden beets, which are full of Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, results in an all-star cleansing smoothie. A superfood root trifecta. “That’s all well and good”, you say…”but how does it taste?” Let’s face it: beets are earthy and turmeric can be a bit bitter. Therefore, adding mango, banana, fresh ginger, and orange zest to the smoothie makes for a tasty drink. Can you still taste the golden beet? Yes. But besides an earthy flavor, this smoothie tastes zesty, sweet, and tropical. It’s one of those rarer non-green green smoothies. It’s “green” because of all the roots (count ’em: THREE types of roots in this smoothie!). But it’s not actually green. It’s yella.

Golden Beet, Mango, and Turmeric Smoothie - a healing superfood smoothie recipe!

Incorporating roasted walnuts and chia seeds adds texture and helps create a fine balance of fiber, natural sugars, vitamins and minerals, protein, and Omega 3s. It detoxifies. It cleanses. It’s three-root green smoothie that is not actually green.

You’re going to want this after Cinco de Mayo. You’re going to want this for sexto de mayo.

Something about writing “sexto de mayo” just sounds so wrong (but also kind of intriguing?). I can find fresh turmeric at Whole Foods at least once a month, so I’ll definitely have to scoop some up to smoothie next time I spot it!

  2. Rocquie says:

I’ll pass on the seeds but otherwise this looks like a fantastic smoothie. I can’t wait to try it. Thank you for sharing, Rocquie

i have been making mango kale smoothies with turmeric and honey…but the idea of adding beets and bananas sounds great. i heard black pepper helps activate healthy components in turmeric, any thoughts?

Who would have thought tumeric could look so good inside of a yella tropical smoothie?! If I ever get lucky enough to find some, I’ll know what to do with it, thanks! 🙂

Recreating this! And I’m not just saying that. What a brilliant combo! And I totally agree about what turmeric looks like 😉 hehe. I’ve yet to be able to find the fresh turmeric, so hopefully dried will do the trick for this in the meantime 🙂 Great, great recipe!!!

    1. Julia says:

So happy to hear you’re going to make it! I’ve used ground turmeric quite a bit in smoothies, but I have to be careful about how much I use because I sometimes go a bit overboard. For this smoothie, maybe start with 1/2 teaspoon and go from there? Fingers crossed a ginger root gets frisky with a carrot and turmeric ends up in your produce section soon 😉

  16. Janel @ Creating Tasty Stories says:

I have always loved beets, so this sounds yummy to me! My winter-weary body sure could use a nice detox right now.

    1. Julia says:

Beet lovers unite!! So happy to hear you enjoy beets and are up for this cleansing smoothie. It’s not every day you hear someone is willing to drink their beet, much less eat it 😉
