You’re in the right place because this easy chicken burger patty recipe includes everything you need to know in order to make perfect burgers every time.

This easy recipe results in ultra flavorful chicken burgers with the absolute best tender texture! Just think: meatballs in patty form!

Perfect for busy weeknights, this chicken patty is a great option when you’re itching for a burger experience but aren’t feeling traditional beef burgers.

Let’s discuss the basic ingredients for chicken burgers.

Ingredients for Chicken Burgers:

Lean Ground Chicken: The star of the show! Pick up a pound of ground turkey from the grocery store to make burgers.

Egg: Because chicken is a lean cut of meat, adding an egg (and flour or bread crumbs) transforms an otherwise hard and dry patty into the consistency of a meatball.

If you need to skip the egg, add 2 additional tablespoons of oil.

Avocado Oil: A little oil goes a long way in adding some richness to the lean meat. The purpose of the oil is to enhance flavor and inject a little moisture into the meat.

Olive oil works for the chicken burger recipe; however, I recommend avocado oil or canola oil for cooking the burgers, as olive oil burns at a low temperature.

Breadcrumbs or Flour: Just like the egg, the breadcrumbs (or flour) is here for the best texture. This ingredient provides a similar consistency to meatloaf and ensures the ingredients hold together nicely for a spongy texture.

I use gluten-free all-purpose flour, but regular all-purpose flour works too. If you have Italian breadcrumbs, regular breadcrumbs, or Panko breadcrumbs on hand, use them instead.

Fresh Garlic: A generous amount of garlic brings excitement to the otherwise subtle flavor of chicken. Adjust the amount to your personal taste.

Swap the fresh garlic out for 2 teaspoons of garlic powder if you’d like.

Dijon Mustard (optional): A secret ingredient that brings a slight tang to enhance the flavor profile. Soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce are also great options here.

Sea Salt and Black Pepper: Season the chicken to taste using salt and pepper.

Feel free to add chopped onions and/or Italian seasonings to the patty mixture too!

Now that we’ve covered the simple ingredients, let’s make burgers!

How to Make Chicken Burger Patties:

Add all of the ingredients for the burger patties to a large bowl. Use your hands or a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients until everything is well combined.

The mixture will be very sticky. This is normal.

A metal bowl containing ground chicken, a raw egg yolk, minced garlic, flour, black pepper, and other seasonings, ready to be mixed together.

Heat 2 to 3 tablespoons of avocado oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Allow the skillet to heat up for a few minutes.

While the oil is heating, form four burger patties out of the ground chicken mixture. Patties rise in size during the cooking process.

You can flatten the patties out or press a thumb print into the center of each patty to prevent the patties from bowing up.

Carefully place the burger patties on the hot skillet and cook for 5 minutes per side, until both sides have a nice golden brown crust.

Continue cooking and flipping every 2-3 minutes until the chicken burgers are cooked through. If need be, you can cover the skillet with a lid in order to expedite the process.

If at any point the burgers become too brown, reduce the heat to medium.

Chicken is fully cooked at 165 degrees F. To check the internal temperature, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the burgers.

Enjoy your chicken burger patty on a toasted bun or make a lettuce bun. Include your favorite toppings, such as lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard.

My personal favorite toppings? Cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, BBQ sauce, and avocado with a drizzle of ranch dressing. Devious, right?!

How Long To Bake Chicken Patties:

Prefer baking chicken burgers in the oven instead of pan frying them? No problem. Simply place the patties on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 18-20 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the burgers reach 165 degrees F.

Tips For the Best Chicken Patties:

  1. Flatten the raw chicken patties to about ¼ inch to ½ inch, as they have a tendency to shrink in width and grow in height. This lessens the cook time and ensures the patties cook evenly.
  2. Add fat! Chicken meat is very lean and can therefore lack flavor. Adding oil and an egg elevates the fat content a smidge for the best tasting results.
  3. Get creative with your serving options! Make regular chicken burgers on hamburger buns, or make lettuce bun burgers. Burger salad bowls with mixed greens and fresh vegetables are amazing too!
  4. To prevent the burgers from sticking to the pan, be sure to allow the oil to heat up for several minutes prior to cooking. The hot skillet coupled with generous oil makes a perfect golden brown crust.
  5. Use a high temperature cooking oil. Avocado oil is my favorite oil for cooking at high temperatures due to its omega-3 fatty acid content. I always choose it over vegetable oil. Skip the olive oil in this application, as it burns easily.
  6. Because the meat mixture is very sticky, I don’t recommend cooking the ground chicken burgers over an outdoor grill. The meat will likely stick to the grill grate, which could turn into a mess.
