Hi there! I’m Julia Mueller, cookbook author and creator of The Roasted Root!
This is my cozy corner of the world wide web where I share nutrient-dense whole food recipes, from main dishes, soups, salads, side dishes, appetizers, to desserts, and more!
Iโm here to make you water at the mouth and put the fun back in cooking!

I started this website in 2011 as a hobby. After earning my Masters Degree in Finance from UNR and coming to terms with the fact that I didn’t want to pursue a career in the field, I was itching for a creative outlet to take the edge off of adulthood.
My plan? Make and share recipes share with a close circle of friends and family while figuring out a career path. The actual result? I was so enamored and consumed by the process that I enthusiastically expanded my horizons, and I was able to take The Roasted Root full-time in 2014.ย
Throughout this journey, I have written three cookbooks: Paleo Power Bowls, Delicious Probiotic Drinks, and The Quintessential Kale Cookbook. You can learn more about each cookbook by clicking the associated links, or by visiting my Cookbooks page.
I grew up in a tiny town called Incline Village in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, where playing in the mountains was my everyday norm. I still live in the Reno-Tahoe area, and spend as much time as I can at high elevation.
When Iโm not developing nutritious recipes for this site, Iโm off in the mountains snowboarding, mountain biking, trail running, backpacking, or hiking with my hunky husband.
My love for the great outdoors, as well as fitness and nutrition is the driving force behind my recipes. I strongly believe we can live vivacious lives, infused with foods that serve our needs, taste amazing, and support our lifestyle.
And that brings us to today!

A Little Something Extra About Me
I battled IBS for nearly a decade, which is what ignited my interest in the human body and food’s impact on physical wellness, energy, and mental health.
After working with a holistic RD starting in 2019 to uncover the root cause of my GI issues, I was able to completely get rid of my IBS.
If you’re like me and you’re a sucker for a good story, read How I Healed My Gut, Part One: My Gut Healing Protocol and How I Healed My Gut, Part Two: Healing Through Mindset to learn more about my experience healing my gut and also the shift in perspective that I needed in order to stay well.
My big picture is that I want to live a nourished, impactful life and give as much love and energy to my people as I can.
My Food Philosophy
While I don’t subscribe to a specific diet, I do believe in food’s ability to steer the ship.
My food philosophy comes from years of discovering which foods make my body feel great and work in tandem with my metabolic health. What we put in our bodies is so personal and unique to our genetic makeup and epigenetics.
I eat a diet that’s rich in variety and doesn’t cut out any major food groups, but I do find I operate best on whole foods.
My Favorite Recipes
Some of my personal favorite recipes from this site that I make time and time again!
At its core, eating is not intuitive due to the mechanisms hard-wired in our brains for survival.
I hope you find what you’re looking for here!
Whether that be belly-soothing recipes to help relieve your gut troubles or reduce inflammation, gluten-free inspiration for those who are allergic or intolerant, or low-carb ideas for folks who are looking to improve their metabolic health.
