Oh hey you,

There’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you.

I’ve been feeling disconnected from you lately. And it’s definitely not you, it’s me.

Between bouncing in and out of town all summer and taking three fairly large trips recently, I’ve been in a continual catch-up, work-ahead tailspin. Truthfully, I’ve been wanting to lay my head on life’s bosom and have a snooze.

Just like any relationship, when one or both parties is scrambling to stay above water, the little {{important}} details begin falling through the cracks. For instance, I couldn’t tell you where we stand. I wouldn’t know which recipe(s) you’ve enjoyed the most over the past few months, what aspects of “us” are being neglected, which needs I’m hitting, and on which needs I’m falling short.

Perhaps like the ebb and flow of any relationship, you haven’t felt the same disconnect and all’s well in You Land. Perhaps you’ve been feeling the distance, too. Do we have some work to do? This is me waking up, blinking, and saying, “Well, hello there!” and reconnecting to you. In a strictly platonic way, mind you, because I have boyfriend, don’t make it awkward, let’s keep it PG…13…NC-17…just kidding.

Summary: I’m committed to us. I’ve missed you. I adore you and care about your needs. I want to fall the SHIT out of fall with you. I want us to drink lattes together, eat coffee cake, every squash dish known to man, and consume the best leg o’ turkey this green earth has to offer. I want to share the thickest fall smoothie with you and talk about nothing of any substance. Just kick it. Whaddya say? Can we hold hands as we walk through the fall colors, take deep breaths of cool air, listen to this and that on the Pandoras, and just exist?

My favorite smoothie this fall is a definite change-up from my blueberry-banana-almond milk ush. I’ve been using fresh ripe (drippy ripe) figs, roasted beets, a splash of almond milk (coconut milk is bonkers delicious, too), a palm full of rolled oats, some almond butter, and a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg. The end result? A suuuuuuper thick, creamy, sweet, balanced superfood smoothie.

Spoiler alert: this is not a low-calorie, low-sugar smoothie. I look at it like dessert with mega health benefits. Also great for a post-workout re-fuel snack!

Let’s talk health benefits.

As you’ve probably read a time or 27 on this blog, beets are one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world. They’re a great source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B (folate), Magnesium, Potassium, fiber, antioxidants, and more. The high density of these nutrients in beets makes them great for preventing and curing illness, promoting healthy digestion, blood circulation, heart health, and blood sugar regulation. When I eat beets, I feel a boost of energy that lasts for hours on end. Not to mention, I’m convinced beets are a natural aphrodisiac…just saying.

Quick note: I usually use roasted beets in my smoothies, but you can also use raw beets. for those of you who find the flavor of beets off-putting, I’d recommend grating up half of a small raw beet and using it in this smoothie verses using a cooked beet, as raw beets tend to taste sweeter and less, well, dirty than cooked beets. End note.

In addition to the amazing health benefits of beets, all of the other ingredients in this smoothie add to the nutrient profile. Figs are also considered a superfood in their own right, as they’re full of Vitamins A, B1, B2, calcium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, sodium, and more. We also get some blood circulation benefits from the whole rolled oats and cinnamon, and a boost of healthy fat and protein from almond butter. You’re looking at a very slurp-able meal in a glass. Nourishing, like a good relationship.

My favorite way of drinking this smoothie? With a sprinkling of granola on top. As you sip, you get the crunchy granola along with the super thick smoothie, making for a marvelous texture experience. ALSO, if you stick a cinnamon stick in the smoothie and then slurp the last bit of smoothie out of the stick at the very end, fall will literally explode in your mouth…in technicolor delight. Just trust.

Well, guys, I’m having a really good time. Where do we stand now? Was this good for you? Should I leave you with a few of my favorite jams to help you get in my head? Try this, this, this, and this on the ol’ subwoofer.

I originally made this Fig Beet Fall Smoothie for Love Beets, but tweaked it just a tad to include almond butter for a protein boost. Both recipes are magnificent and have their own place in your day depending on your nutritional needs.

Cheers to us! Sluuuuuuuurp!

Hi Hillary,

I've actually never tried canned beets. My guess is they would work. Let me know if you try the smoothie using canned :)
