It’s Story Time on The Roasted Root! Fancy a song to get us in story mode? Yeah ya do! Readyyyyy, okay!
Let’s make a circle, one two three, come on over sit down with me. Let’s make it round and make it fat, let’s make a circle just…like…that!
That song may or may not have been copied and pasted directly from my first grade classroom. How I remember a song from 1st grade but forgot what I ate for breakfast, I will never know. Yes, we’re making a story time circle. Yes, I expect you to behave yourself. Yes, unlike 1st grade, alcohol is permitted…encouraged…bottoms up! Story time! Plus I have a $100 Visa Gift Card and Book Giveaway for you! But first, the story!
I have always been so fortunate to have strong, fun, reliable friends with whom I can spend valuable time with – party hardy, cry, laugh, relax and talk. Throughout college and to this day, my girlfriends and I make a point of getting together to fill each other in on the latest and greatest. I have received and sent countless text messages stating, “I need a girls’ night.” For this reason, when I heard about Mary Kay Andrews’s newest book, Ladies’ Night, I knew I was in for something I could connect with.
The main character of the story, Grace, is lifestyle blogger (ding ding ding!!) who is going through a rough divorce. She is mandated by the judge assigned to her case to attend a group therapy session, where she meets three ladies (and one man) who all have very different personalities. The group bonds over the legal and emotional process of their divorces and begin spending time with each other at a bar called The Sandbox, which is owned by Grace’s mother.
During these meet-ups at The Sandbox, the ladies (plus the man), who you would never think would become friends because of their varied backgrounds, mirror each other and support one another in the same way my friends and I do: with humor, understanding, laughter…and alcohol’s always a plus.
For me, ladies night is typically an evening in.
We make dinner together…
drink wine…fill each other in on our news…
paint our nails
while watching trashy TV, and just relax.
It does sometimes mean getting all dolled up, taking a picture of ourselves next to a mirror, busting some insane in the membrane moves on the dance floor and then face planting into the couch at the end of the night….
But more so the nail painty thing.
When I opened Ladies’ Night, I was hooked after reading less than one page. I was excited to come home from work, pour a glass of rosé, and soak up the novel. As a blogger myself, I felt drawn to Grace. She’s the kind of woman my friends and I would love to hang with over appetizers and wine…and beer…and brownies.
I enjoyed the fact that Andrews set the stage for what it is like for a blogger like Grace to prepare, photograph, write and edit a blog post. She touches on blog revenue and intellectual property, which are two very important aspects to blogging. In the story, Grace includes recipes in some of her posts and Andrews took the liberty to make some of the Ladies’ Night inspired recipes available for readers to try for their own ladies nights. Food, drinks, friends…a recipe for a perfect evening!
Andrews’ writing style flows effortlessly. Her humor and descriptive visuals made me feel as though I was watching a witty, heart-warming, heart-wrenching, intelligent, action-packed, all around feel-good movie. Truthfully, I was quite bummed when I finished the book because it was a great source of entertainment. I will definitely be reading Andrews’ previous works because I adore her style of writing.
